How to Use Launch X431 SmartLink C J2534 Passthru Device?
The Launch X431 SmartLink C 2.0 is a versatile diagnostic module for commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, and new energy models. It supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB connectivity, functioning as both a local and remote J2534 Passthru device. It also integrates with devices like X431 V+, PRO3S+, PRO3 APEX, PRO3 ACE and PRO5 for advanced diagnostics and remote ECU reprogramming.
Feature 1: Local J2534 Passthru Device
The SmartLink C can connect to a PC with OEM diagnostic software to perform local J2534 reprogramming using a USB cable.
Steps to Set Up:
1.Download and Install Launch J2534 Tool:
Visit www.cnlaunch.com.
Navigate to:
Products >> E-commerce product >> X-431 PAD VII Elite >> Download >> Download.
Locate Smartlink J2534.zip and click Download.
2.Install the J2534 Software:
Extract the downloaded file and open Launch J2534.exe.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
You will also find an operation guide (J2534 operation guide_EN.pdf) in the extracted folder.
3.Start J2534 Reprogramming:
Follow the illustration below to make connections and settings.
Launch the OEM diagnostic software on your PC.
When prompted to select a VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface), choose Launch J2534.
If no prompt appears, follow the software’s instructions to proceed with diagnostics.
Notes:
The SmartLink device can also serve as a VCI device to perform functions like reading and clearing DTCs or monitoring live data.
Always use the device with the manufacturer’s programming application for best results.
How to update VCI firmware?
Connect the J2534 Pass-thru device to the PC via a USB cable
Double-click the Launch J2534 Tool to run it. The following screen will appear:
Tap “Upgrade”, and the system will start detecting all available newer versions.
If a new version is found, the system will automatically upgrade to the latest version.
Note: Please do not run the diagnostic software of the vehicle manufacturer during the upgrade.
If you come across some problems, please slide the Log switch to ON to record the log file. In this case, you need to run the diagnostic software again.
Vehicle Coverage:
The supported vehicle models are decided by
1) Whether the vehicle manufacturer’s diagnostic software supports the J2534 protocol;
2) Which protocols are covered by the current Launch J2534 tool.

Feature 2: Remote J2534 Passthru Device
The SmartLink C supports remote J2534 ECU reprogramming through an internet connection, making it ideal for remote diagnostics.
Steps to Use:
1.Requirement:
Ensure a stable and strong internet connection for the SmartLink C.
Install both the OEM diagnostic software and the Launch J2534 tool on your PC.
2.Connect SmartLink C to the Vehicle and Internet:
Plug the SmartLink C into the vehicle's DLC port and connect it to the internet.
Switch the device to super remote diagnosis mode.
3.Perform Remote J2534 Reprogramming:
Use the same installation and operation instructions outlined in Feature 1.
Notes:
Remote J2534 reprogramming offers similar functionality to local programming, making it ideal for off-site diagnostics.
